Evan joined DGI in 2009 as an operations analyst, but his duties have since shifted to marketing and client service. His primary role is handling all non-investment aspects of The Disciplined Growth Investor Fund, including developing the shareholder base and creating a sense of community with the shareholders
Before coming to DGI, Evan spent three years at Ameriprise Financial, helping advisors handle stock and options trading, and contributing to marketing initiatives within the separately-managed account team.
At DGI, Evan develops the strategy for the long-term growth of the Disciplined Growth Investors Fund (DGIFX), and creates marketing materials and web site content to promote the fund.
“We’ve given Evan a mutual fund to sell without any of the usual marketing tools to sell it with and no resources dedicated to selling it,” says DGI Director of Marketing Robert Buss. “He has had to become very become familiar with the phrase, ‘necessity is the mother of invention.’”
The fund is not listed on any brokerage distribution platforms, so fund investors must buy shares directly from the company.
"Offering the Fund directly allows us to cut out additional costs for selling the Fund," says Evan. "My job has been to develop a system that gives investors the ability to interact with us through the website. We want to make the shareholders feel that they are involved in the Fund, and to provide all the resources they need through the web site."
Beyond the mutual fund, Evan is involved in updating the firm’s marketing materials, the web site, and the marketing data base. He also assists the investment team in client service and creating client presentations.
“Evan was hired as an operations assistant, but he has really evolved in his role since joining DGI,” says DGI analyst Nicholas Hansen.
“It’s a culture shock to move here from a big organization like Ameriprise,” explains Rick Martin, DGI CFO. “It’s hard to break that mind set when you think things are always supposed to be done one way. Coming here was a complete paradigm shift for Evan. But he is a bright, energetic individual who is eager to figure out his niche here where he can help contribute to the growth of the firm.”
Snowboarding the Globe
In his time off, Evan likes to spend as much time outdoors as he can. "I get to the mountains as often as possible,” he says. In the winter, he spends his time snowboarding, which generally requires heading out West. In the (short) Minnesota summers, Evan likes to be outside at a baseball game, on the lake, on the golf course, or exercising.
But it doesn’t take a layer of fresh powder to get Evan out of the house. “If it’s a nice day, I’m probably not inside.” He likes to hit the road as often as possible. “I’m probably in a different state about once a month, either for business or fun.”
Evan passed the CFA Level III exam in July 2013.
He received a Masters in Business Administration from UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in July, 2015.
