Jason joined Disciplined Growth Investors in 2011 as an investment analyst to support the portfolio managers by tracking existing holdings and researching potential portfolio picks.
Before coming to DGI, Jason served for five years as an officer in the U.S. Navy and worked for three years at US Bancorp as a capital strategy and risk manager.
Since joining DGI, Jason has focused on learning and practicing the DGI philosophy and process – something exemplified by his colleagues: “The investment team has an incredible wealth of experience and success picking great companies and holding them for long periods of time. To interact with and learn from successful practitioners has felt a little bit like being in an apprenticeship with masters in the craft of stock-picking." He goes on to describe the crucial element of patience necessary to hold stocks for the long-term: "I can't see how it's possible to build deep knowledge of the companies you own by continuously churning the entirety of your portfolio once, twice, or even more times in a single year. It can take us weeks to do the research required for a single stock; and even then, it may not make it into the portfolio. Or, alternatively, we may have to wait years for an appropriate entry point. We're rebels in an industry that encourages portfolio turnover."
For each stock he researches, he puts together a forward-looking, seven-year model that projects revenue, earnings, and the intrinsic value of the stock. “We're looking for the few key drivers that will make the stock successful,” he explains. “We’re interested in knowing what is the company’s competitive advantage and whether it is sustainable: can it be continuously rejuvenated over many years by a healthy internal culture that is purposefully curated? What are the milestones it must hit as part of its fundamental performance and what are the risks of owning it?”
His research process includes digging through SEC filings, corporate presentations and analyst reports, as well as talking with company executives. “It’s dynamic and invigorating; no two days are the same,” he says. “That’s the great thing about this profession - you never stop learning.”
“Jason has been a fantastic addition to the firm,” says Scott Link, DGI Portfolio Manager. “He’s a perfect fit for our culture.”
“Jason is a great analyst,” explains Fred Martin, DGI President. “He’s very thorough. He digs and he digs and he just keeps digging.”
“He has the ability to really focus on one topic,” adds Rob Nicoski, DGI Portfolio Manager. “He’s very diligent.”
Family and football
Away from work, Jason enjoys spending time with his wife and raising two young daughters, reading non-fiction and science-fiction, and staying physically active. He also grew up and is an avid San Francisco 49ers football fan, never missing a game when they play in Minnesota.
Jason was fortunate to travel extensively while in the U.S. Navy, visiting such destinations as Greece, Croatia, Malta, the UAE, Singapore, Australia, and South Korea. One of his favorite destinations are the Azores, where both his parents originated.
