Peter joined DGI in 2004 after graduating from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
When he started with DGI, his duties included updating external consultant databases and developing testing procedures for the firm's compliance effort. A year later, the role of IT manager was added to his duties. In recent years, that role has shifted to take on more responsibility as the Chief Compliance Officer, while continuing to serve as the architect and occasional repair man for DGI's technology systems.
“As CCO, my job is to make sure we live up to the duties of loyalty and care we owe our clients,” says Peter. “I look at the activities of the firm, assess the risks, and implement policies and procedures to manage those risks. Then I review those policies and procedures to make sure they work as intended.”
“Businesswise, Peter has the perfect temperament for the job,” says DGI Director of Marketing Robert Buss. “He actually understands business–not just compliance regulations.”
His compliance duties entail every facet of the operation, including reporting, trading, processing transactions and monitoring adherence to the firm's code of ethics.. He implemented a pre- and post-trade compliance system for the firm’s trading platform that automatically tracks trades within each client’s account and insures adherence to their specific trading restrictions.
“Peter is very well versed in business, and has a thorough understanding of compliance issues,” says DGI CFO Rick Martin. “Compliance people, as a group, are often confused with the ‘business prevention unit,’ but Peter takes a very common sense approach to his responsibilities.”
"I picked him to be head of compliance,” explains DGI President Fred Martin, “because he is totally unafraid to stand up to me.”
“He’s calm under pressure,” adds DGI Portfolio Manager Scott Link. “He’s a highly ethical compliance officer.”
Outside of work, Peter stays busy spending time with his wife and three children. Peter and his family enjoy camping and exploring along Minnesota’s North Shore and Wisconsin’s South Shore on Lake Superior.
Peter is an avid reader and compulsive book buyer, his favorite subjects are biography, American and world history, and baseball. He is an accomplished guitarist, and has been playing since he was about 13 years old. He recently took up distance running and is a die-hard fan of the Minnesota Twins.
