Rick joined DGI in 2008 as chief financial officer. He is responsible for managing the business side of the organization, focusing on business strategy and execution. “We’re the glue that holds the ship together between client services and the investment arm.”

Prior to joining DGI, Rick worked for 14 years at US Bank, where he worked his way up to become the head of the investment arm of the private bank. He managed 175 investment professionals across the nation, with more than $60 billion of assets under management.

“Rick started with a mundane job at US Bank and moved up the ladder to become the head of the private bank,” says Director of Marketing Robert Buss. “When someone moves that high that fast, they often have to step on some toes along the way. Not Rick. His colleagues universally said he did not play politics to move ahead. When he came here, they all said it would be our gain and their loss.”

Rick’s success can be attributed to his ability to deal methodically and even-handedly with critical issues. “Rick is what I call the facilitator,” says DGI Portfolio Manager Rob Nicoski. “He is so congenial, he’s able to relate to anyone, so he’s very good at bringing people together to build a consensus even on contentious issues.”

“Rick doesn’t take the quickest or easiest route,” explains DGI Operations Team Leader Cindy Lee. “He doesn’t cut corners. He envisions the big picture, gathers information and establishes the path for getting the project done.”

At DGI, Rick took the lead in launching the Disciplined Growth Investors Fund, and established the delivery strategy of the mutual fund. He also overseas the firm’s branding and web site development initiatives.

“Rick was the missing piece here,” says Fred Martin. “He has all the right tools to be a great leader. Everybody trusts him.”

“Rick is the perfect match for Fred,” adds Director of Client Relationships Sheri Lietzke. “He’s the calming force who can bring all these different personalities together. When he’s in charge of a project, you know it’s going to be a very thoughtful process. He has a very calm, steady manner with everything he does.”

Fast balls and Fly Fishing

At Northwest Missouri State, Rick was a starting pitcher for the college baseball team. With four athletic children, he has remained active in sports, coaching his children’s teams in softball, baseball and basketball. “I like helping the players develop the skill set and the strategy of the sport,” says Rick. “I find the preparation and skill training fascinating—even more so than the games themselves.”
He also enjoys hunting and fishing. He’s part of a club of about 15 “wing” shooters who hunt geese and ducks on a private spread in western Minnesota. “I like the camaraderie and I like being outside in nature. The worse the conditions the better I like it. That’s when the hunting seems to be the best. They call it ‘being on the X’. That’s when everything lines up—the birds are there and the conditions are right.”

Rick also likes the Zen-like challenge of fly fishing. “It’s not just fishing; there’s an art to it.”
