At Disciplined Growth Investors we have a close-knit team that is curious, passionate and a little eccentric. In their own ways, they each exemplify the qualities that make DGI unique. In order to recognize and encourage what our people were already doing, we created Project Bold.
DGI sponsors employees as they make bold moves in their own lives. To try something new. To stare down the unknown until it hands over its secrets. To ride no coat tails. To rest on no laurels.
These are their stories…
Fred is far from the silent type. He never won the “quiet game” growing up. And he has never been short for words as an adult. So it surprised everyone when he chose to go on a “silent retreat”. “With my personality, the idea of being completely quiet for three days was something no one thought I could do.”
“With my personality, the idea of being completely quiet for three days was something no one thought I could do.”
The “silent retreat” was held at the scenic Jesuit Demontreville Retreat House near Lake Elmo, Minnesota. There is no TV, no telephone and no talking throughout the day or evening except for an optional recreation period after dinner—for those who can no longer contain themselves. Fred chose not to break his silence either night. “I literally did not talk for the entire three days.”
He spent his time thinking deep thoughts, meditating, reading and walking the grounds of the lakeside retreat. There were several 30-minute group sessions each day where the priests discussed spiritual topics for attendees to ponder, e.g. “What would life be like if Christ had not risen from the dead?” Fred was also asked to write an introspective report about himself and where he came from, dating back to his earliest childhood memories.
In the end, Fred said his vow of silence was surprisingly easy to keep. And he found the experience extremely enlightening and uplifting. “It gives you a rare chance to think deeply about your life. The first week back, I was really on fire with new ideas.”
